Training and body awareness

I transformed my life several times from being a horse trainer, show rider, globetrotter, through security officer all the way to a performing artist. 

I always followed my dreams. Listened to my intuition, my tiny little voice that guides me like a compass through the big adventure called life.

  • Sometimes like a fine tingling feeling in my gut.
  • Or a burden, feeling heavy in my chest.
  • Some day’s it felt like euphoria circling my body.
  • Other days like a silent longing in the corner of my heart.

I am grateful I always found the courage to take the steps I needed to do. They made me the person I am today.

I would like to mention some of the benefits I have received from training as an artist athlete over the past few years. I was not in tune with myself before I started the years of circus training,

  • I was not grounded. 
  • Not attending my body.
  • Not able to take the lead in my life!
  • I had no self-love.

During my body awareness journey

I learned to appreciate my body. I spend so many hours just sitting on the floor, stretching my legs and pointing my toes. In a way, I enjoyed every single minute of the nasty stretching pain because it made me feel my physical self! It was about me. Not an outside distraction.

When was the last time you felt and appreciated your feet? “Point” your foot as far as possible (yes, right now) so that you get that beautifully arched back of your foot and notice how that makes you appear elegant. A great feeling!

Over the years of daily training I have learned:

  • To trust my body!
  • To be sure that my body gets where I want it!
  • And that my body is doing its best to serve me!
  • Falling in love with my Body!

It is a very satisfying feeling to walk through the world with good body awareness.

Body awareness example

I’ll tell you a little story from my daily circus life:

There’s this circus-like pose (Picture above). I was and still am obsessed with this pose. It took me over two years to hold this pose. When I started aerial acrobatics 4 years ago, this pose seemed out of reach. Perhaps that was precisely the incentive to master this challenge. An ultimate goal, something I could burn and work towards. For me, this pose appeared to be the most beautiful secret of aerial acrobatics.

What does it take and how is it possible for my body to master this pose? In the beginning, I was far from holding the pose. A lovable helper always had to hold my legs to take off my body weight. At some point, there was no one there to help me out and the struggles got real! I had to bundle all my energy to overcome my weaker self and continue to train on my own.

Understanding body awareness step by step

This pose is officially known as the “one-armed flag”. I quickly learned that aerial acrobats call it the colloquial “arm breaker”. This name is very appropriate. For a year when I fell into the pose, I felt the pain was a shock! My arm presses my ribs together and squeezes the breath out of my lungs. At the same time, it feels like the arm is breaking in two under the weight, and as if the shoulder is being ripped out of the ball at any moment.

All these sensations come together in one amazing sensation! I love the pain It is real and gives the feeling of being alive! Not only adrenaline but also endorphin flows through the circulation. The kick is guaranteed every time! A natural high in every training session! Today I feel safe landing the “arm crusher” and my body has adapted to the extreme conditions. The pain is less, the feeling of high remains the same. With every training, I get closer to the goal to master the pose!

I gained self-confidence.

  • I gained self-confidence.
  • Grew courage.
  • Stabilized the meaning of life.
  • Thrilling the spirit.
